Every year, on 18th May, International Museum Day is celebrated globally. Celebration of this day is coordinated by International Council of Museum (ICOM) in 1977. Celebration is based on the specific theme which that changes every year by ICOM. This year theme to celebrate this day is: Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.
This day provides opportunities for museum professionals to meet people and guide them for challenges that museum faces every year. International Museum Day aware public how museum play roles to society development globally.
Every year, International museum day (IMD) has gained more popularity all over the world. In 2009, more than 20000 museum hosting evented took part in more than 90 countries globally. In 2010, 98 countries, in 2011 100 countries took part for celebration. While in 2012, more than 30000 museum took part in more than 129 countries. In 2011, the official International Museum Day poster is released by ICOM into 37 different languages and in 2012 with 38 languages.
Theme of 2017:
To celebrate IMD, this year theme is: Museums and Contested Histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums. Main focus for this theme is the role of IMD and how this day is benefitted to the society. This day also become the hub to promote peaceful relationship between people. This theme looks at how to understand the inconceivable aspects of history. This theme encourage the museums to play an active role in calmly addressing distressing histories through musing and different points of views.
