Day of United Nations Peacekeepers Observed Globally on May 29

UN Peacekeepers day - 29 May

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed by UN on 29th May every year, globally. In December 2002, UN’s General Assembly designated voted for a resolution to observe this day after official request of Ukraine Government and Ukrainian Peacekeeper Association to the UN’s General Assembly. In 2003, on the anniversary of United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) which was United Nations first peacekeeper mission, this day is started to observe. And that date is 29th May.

Observation of this day is to tribute all the men and women who already served and also serving into UN’s Peacekeeping Operations. They are those people who served for their high level of professionalism, courage, dedication and honor the memory of those who just lost their lives for the cause of peace.

After many year of observance of International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, UN started to focus especially for women in peacekeeping in year 2009. UN focus of the role and need of women in peacekeeping.
